Beijing’s oldest Olympic volunteer

(Image © Andrew Milligan/PA Wire) At a time when most people his age would be relaxing and spending time with their families, 103-year-old Fu Yiquan has far more active ideas.

The Chinese centenarian is the oldest of the 400,000 volunteers working at the Beijing Olympics.

Although he can’t go to the stadiums to work, Fu is an official Capital Security Volunteer at the Games.

His duties involve helping spectators and tourists, ensuring litter is picked up and patrolling the streets of his neighbourhood three times a day, reports the Xinhua news agency.

Man tells 911 he was robbed by slot machine

(Image © AP Photo/Bradley C Bower) A 47-year-old man has been arrested in Florida on charges of making false 911 calls.

The Associated Press reports that Carlos Gutierrez was at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on August 4 and called 911 to say the slot machine he was playing had stolen his money. A police report says Gutierrez left the casino only to place another emergency call reporting the same incident.

Gutierrez’s arrest is the second time in the last week that a man from Florida has been charged with making a false emergency call. In Jacksonville, Reginald Peterson called a police emergency hot line number twice after staff at a Subway sandwich shop left his favourite Italian sauce off his sandwich.

Phony driver arrested for borrowing buses

(Image © AP Photo/Rob Griffith) An 18-year-old man who allegedly stole buses and drove them along their correct routes has been arrested in Florida.

Bus-obsessed James Harris is thought to have picked up and dropped off passengers on a number of routes in the Miami-Dade area. He even wore the correct uniform to avoid being rumbled. Police believe he did not steal any fares.

Harris was arrested after the most recent bus theft. Police suspect him of stealing at least three other buses from different depots in Miami-Dade and taking the vehicles out for up to six hours at a time. He has been charged with three counts of theft and burglary.
