US boy finds and returns cash-stuffed rucksack

(Image © Chris Radburn/PA) A boy picking up litter in a small American town found a backpack stuffed with more than US$8,000 cash.

Ten-year-old Arie Johnston was helping his grandmother in the annual roadside clean-up in Alton, New Hampshire, when he spotted a charred rucksack, reports local newspaper Foster’s Daily Democrat.

Arie’s grandmother contacted the town clerk about the discovery. Based on documents found in the backpack, the clerk was able to identify the bag’s owner: a woman who lived in Alton until a fire damaged her apartment in 2008.

Associated Press (AP) reports that the woman has since moved to the state of Maine and asked that the money be given to her sister who still lives in Alton.

According to AP, Arie’s grandmother believes a reward may be forthcoming.

    Pennsylvania pair are text maniacs

(Image © AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster) Two men from Pennsylvania claim they have broken a world record by exchanging more than 217,000 texts in a month.

Between March 7 and April 6, Nick Andes and Doug Klinger say they texted each other non-stop in a bird to break the record of 182,000 texts received by Deepak Sharma of India in 2005, reports UPI.

Despite having an unlimited texting plan, Andes’ record-setting feat almost saddled him with a bill for $26,000 (US dollars). Luckily, his provider T-Mobile agreed to waive the bill on the condition that he refrained from any more mobile-based record attempts in the future.

Council backs recruitment drive for Morris dancers

(Image © Harrow Council)Young, fit and active? Then Harrow Council wants you to tie on bells and hankies to learn the traditional art of Morris dancing.

The Council is backing its local Morris 'side', the Merrydowners Morris, with publicity for a recruitment drive.

The authority is also loaning the dancers free use of a historic 16th century barn to practice in and hopefully sign up new members to learn the ancient folk custom. The Council will also provide free publicity for Morris dancing workshops.

From April 15, the authority is allowing the borough's local team, the Merrydowners Morris, regular free use of Harrow's historic Tithe barn - built in 1506 on the orders of the Archbishop of Canterbury - for rehearsals and workshops.

And from next month, Harrow Council will help the 16-member Morris dancing "side", formed in 1990, with a recruitment drive to sign up new members. The Council's help will consist of free use of the barn, based at Harrow Museum, and publicity material to promote workshops open to the public.

Anxiety over the future of Morris dancing was raised in January when the Morris Ring, which represents more than 200 teams, warned that the dearth of new blood could mean the traditional English art dying out in 20 years.

Tony Adamson, Bagman for the Merrydowners Morris, said: "I'm delighted at Harrow's support. We hope to convert the curious into dancers when they see us perform close up in the Tithe barn and try the moves for themselves! We'd welcome fiddle, flute or accordion players as well as dancers."

Record crowd queues to spend a penny

(Image © REUTERS/Sebastien Pirlet) A record-breaking crowd of 756 people formed the world’s longest ever queue for a toilet in the Belgian capital of Brussels on March 22 to raise awareness for the need for clean water on World Water Day.

The event was organised by the United Nations' children's agency UNICEF. Each participant was given a numbered wristband and a certificate recognising their involvement in the world record attempt.

None of the 756 people actually used the latrine, a replica of the ‘dry latrines’ used by UNICEF in third world countries.

Bus driver fired for crime mascot attack

McGruff the Crime Dog (Image © AP Photo/Barry Thumma) Transit authorities in Washington DC have fired a bus driver who allegedly punched an off-duty police officer who was dressed as law mascot McGruff the Crime Dog.

According to UPI, Metro spokeswoman Candace Smith said Shawn Brim, 39, who has been driving buses in the district since June 2003, was fired after the completion of an internal probe into the incident, The Washington Examiner reported.

Smith said Brim was accused of exiting a bus while he was on duty on February 28 and punching Officer Tyrone Hardy, who was wearing a McGruff costume, in the head.

Brim drove away in his bus but was soon stopped by police. He reportedly told the officers he had struck Hardy ‘to be funny’, Smith said.

Police said several young people witnessed the attack. Brim has been charged with misdemeanour assault.

Man stuffs cat into homemade bong

(Image © AP Photo/Lancaster County Sheriff Dept) A man has been arrested after allegedly stuffing his cat in this homemade bong in a bid to calm the pet down, reports The Sun.

Police say 20-year-old Acea Schomaker blew marijuana smoke into the device through a garden hose after putting the female feline inside.

Associated Press reports Schomaker said he never intended to hurt the 6-month-old cat, Shadow, and that he had put the pet in the bong on other occasions and that it calmed the tabby down.

According to AP, Schomaker said law enforcement and animal specialists lectured him about why what he did was cruel, and that he learned from his mistake.

Missing dog returns home after nine years

(Image © Trev Porter/Wiltshire Police/PA Wire) A German shepherd dog called Astro who had been missing for over nine years has finally returned home, reports the Associated Press.

Astro’s owners, the Geary family, were shocked when they received a call from an animal control officer who said their long-lost pet had been found.

Astro went missing from the Geary’s home in Port St Lucie, Florida, shortly after being adopted by the family. Since then, they have moved three times and currently reside in Louisville, Kentucky.

In late January 2009, Astro was found in Tennessee by an animal control officer responding to a report about a dog running loose. After picking Astro up, the officers were able to reunite the lost pet with the Gearys thanks to a microchip implanted in the hound’s neck.

AP reports that Dennis Geary wasn’t sure if Astro would remember him. But when they were reunited, the dog sat down and began licking him.
